Creativity
By Gabriel Ogundimu of UltraSuperAffiliate
History is but the story of the achievements of people who had imagination and molded it into a tangible thing; thus the concept, “Creativity”. Creativity is the process of combining former experience in the reproduction of new images, which are different from any of those previously experienced. It is this creativity that has benefited mankind and left its mark upon the world through invention and discoveries since the dawn of civilization. Creativity entails the using of one’s power or ability to create things, showing imagination and originality as well as routine skill. Creativity is also the continuous process of re-creation or reproducing mental image stored in the memory under the suggestion of associated image. In this manner, we are able to re-visit places where we have been in time past. Creativity invoked whenever any new thing it brought to life. In order to be creative, one has to be very observant. Observant in the sense that, you make a perfect and conversant survey of your environment you have to explore the unknown. It is when you familiarize yourself with the environment that you are able to create. Also, in order to create, one must be a good thinker, not daydreaming, but with prompt action. Everything that man has ever made was first a thought before it became a reality. All the fine arts are distinctly marking as products of mind. Back of every musical composition, vocal or instrument, behind every dream of artist whether revealed in marble or on converse, there always stands man – the thinker. When asker how he came to discover the law of Gravitation, Newton is reported to have answered, “by always thinking about it”; therefore, the mind should be put into training because it has a creation vegetative power which can not be wholly idle. If it is not laid out and cultivated into a beautiful garden it will shoot up in weeds and flower of a wild growth. Memory also helps in creativity. Memory must be ready with her stores of useful knowledge, gathered from fields far and near. She must be trained to classify and arrange them, so as to hold them in her grasp: A writer once said that the greatest sin of mankind is his neglect to use his greatest asset – the memory. Also to be creative, you should be self-controlled. The power of self – control is one of the greatest qualities that differentiate man from the lower animals. In short, to create, one must be able to manipulate the power from within with the outer agencies, that is, to combine extrinsic and the intrinsic together. “Man has two creators – his God and himself” says William George Jordan. “His first Creator furnished him the raw material of his life, and the laws in conformity with which he can make that life what he will. His second creator – himself- has marvelous powers, which he rarely realizes. The creator – man – and his power to create can thus be seen as a version or re – version of the power that creates and sustains his existence. His begin in the world is a continuous process of re – creation, thus we see that man – the creator – does not wholly create totally rather he copies the work of God the maker –the great Architect of all - to make his creative power into reality. Most of the things he creates have – if not wholly – been partially created by the maker. When we look at colors, we see that all colors invented or created by man are copied work of existing colors in leaves, skies, flowers, butterflies and host of others. Though man may not totally create, yet, he is a creator in his own sense. The environment, which is conducive for creativity, is to be in solitude. To do much clear thinking”, said Thomas A. Edison, “a man must arrange a regular period of solitude when he can concentrate and indulge his imagination without distraction”. “Solitude is as needful to the imagination as society is wholesome for the character,” said James Resell Lowell. “Solitude is the nest of thought”, Says a Kurdish proverb. To crown it all, in order to utilize the power of creative imagination, our mental attitude is extremely important. It must be positive and must be backed up by an unfailing faith in the attainment of your objective. As the Jamaican proverb goes, “prayer need not be long when faith is strong”. When we call upon the forces of our creative imagination during prayerful thinking, meditation, or our solitude, we must do so in faith. Ideas are worthless unless you do something about them. Back up the product of your creative imagination with action. Then and then only can they become the fruits of success – creativity – in life.
